Rhabdomyolysis Disease Symptoms, Causes, Prevention and Treatments

Rhabdomyolysis Disease the breakdown of muscle can cause releasing of myoglobin into the bloodstream and these myoglobin acts as a protein which used to store oxygen in the muscles. If a person is having too much myoglobin in his blood, it can cause damage of kidney.

Rhabdomyolysis Disease: Symptoms

The symptoms at the start of the rhabdomyolysis disease can be subtle and they are not very specific and may be mimic other conditions. Some of the symptoms are described as follows:

  • muscle weakness
  • low urine output
  • fatigue
  • soreness
  • bruising
  • dark, tea-colored urine
  • infrequent urination
  • a fever
  • a sense of malaise, or feeling sick
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • confusion
  • agitation

Rhabdomyolysis Disease: Causes

This Rhabdomyolysis disease is always triggered by the injury of muscle and this injury can be in the form of physical, chemical or some genetic causes. All things which creates the damages in muscle can also be the cause of this condition. Some of the possible causes are described as follows:

Trauma, heat, and exertion

Causes which are included in this category are

  • a crush injury, which can occur when something heavy falls on you
  • a heatstroke
  • a third-degree burn
  • blocked blood vessels
  • a lightning strike
  • intense shivering
  • an ischemic limb injury, which occurs when your tissue lacks an adequate blood supply
  • pathological muscle exertion
  • a car accident
  • intense exercise, such as marathon running

Genetic and metabolic disorders

Some of the individuals develop this disease due to some genetic conditions like problems with their metabolism of

  • lipids, or fats
  • carbohydrates
  • purines, which are in certain foods, such as sardines, liver, asparagus

Some problems related to metabolic like some of the following can also trigger the disease rhabdomyolysis

  • hypothyroidism or low thyroid hormone levels
  • diabetic ketoacidosis, or a buildup of ketones in the body
  • electrolyte imbalances

Disorders related to genes which can lead to the disease includes the following

  • a carnitine deficiency
  • McArdle’s disease
  • a lactate dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Infection and inflammation

There are different types of the infections and inflammation which can cause the rhabdomyolysis are as follows:

  • viral infection
  • bacterial infections
  • polymyositis
  • dermatomyositis
  • snakebites

Medications and toxins

One of the most important cause of the disease is strain medications which are having the inclusion of cholesterol lowering drugs which may be taken by the people. These statins include

  • atorvastatin(Lipitor)
  • rosuvastatin (Crestor)
  • pravastatin (Pravachol)

As the disease rhabdomyolysis only occurs in some of the people who takes the statins so that many of the people take these medications which is very important to be aware of the risk.

Rhabdomyolysis Disease: Prevention

The rhabdomyolysis disease can be prevented by drinking much of the fluids before and after the exercise as this will help in diluting the urine and it will help the people’s kidney to eliminate any of the myoglobin in his muscles which may have released during the exercise. If any person has an existing degenerative muscle condition or is having the sustained damage to the muscle after having a recent trauma, then a person can prevent rhabdomyolysis by staying well hydrated all of the times. Drinking as much water as required by the person can also be helpful in preventing this disease.
