Iron Deficiency and what is its Symptoms
Iron deficiency occurs when there are not enough iron minerals in the body. This anemia is the most common type of anemia and is the lack of red blood cells that carry oxygen to other tissues.
When there is not enough iron in the body, the hemoglobin protein that necessary for red blood cells to carry oxygen cannot be produced. And as a result, if you don’t have enough oxygen in your body, symptoms like fatigue and short of breath will occur.
What Causes Iron Deficiency Anemia?
There are several causes of it including follows:
Blood Loss: Red blood cells contain iron, so if you lose blood, you lose iron. Women who experience heavy mentrual period are at risk of it because of loosing blood much. Regular use of aspirin, urinary tract bleeding, peptic ulcer or a colon polyp can cause iron deficiency anemia.
Diets: The amount of iron the body should take daily is 18 milligrams in women and 8 milligrams for men. If iron-rich foods such as egg,meat, leafy green vegetablesare not consumed, it cause iron deficiency.
The body can not absorb iron; Iron in the food that you eat is absorbed in the small intestine. An intestinal disorder like ulcerative colitis or celiac disease can lead to it.
Pregnancy: Pregnant women need extra iron for the baby. If you don’t get enough iron from food you eat, you can develop iron deficiency anemia.
Shortness of breath
Yellow or pale skin
Cold feet and hands
Restless Legs Syndrome
This treatment depends on the cause and severity of the condition. In most cases, doctors prescribe iron tablets. Taking vitamin C also helps your body absorb the iron. The doctor may recommend taking iron pills with a glass of orange juice or vitamin C supplementation.
