Antibiotics are drugs used to treat and prevent infections caused by bacteria in boths humans and animals. Also known as a antimicrobial medicines, antibiotics have save numerous lives if used properly. However, misuse and overuse of these drugs lead to a phenmenon known as antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic resistance, which has become a growing problem, is one of the most important problems for public health. Such resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat drugs designated to fight them. When bacterias become resistant to drugs, cannot be killed by antibiotics and they multiply.
Antibiotic resistant bacteria can cause disease leading to dangerous infections. When a person is infected with an antibiotic resistant bacterium, the treatment of that patient will be more difficult and more expensive. Moreover, Resistant bacteria may spread to other people and can lead to serious disease or even death.

Misuse and overuse of antibiotics contributed to development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotics can treat only bacterial infections, they do not have any effect on viral infections such as flu, common cold, bronchitis, sinus or ear infections. The widespread use of antibiotics for these viral infections is an example of how this drugs are being misused.
Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics through many ways. While some bacteria can deactivate an antibiotic by changing it in a way which makes it unharmful, others can change their structure. As a result, antibiotics cannot fight bacteria designed to be killed.
