Acid Reflux Disease, Symptoms, Causes And Treatment
The food in the stomach enters through the LES (lower oesophageal sphincter). It acts as a valve. As soon as the food passes through the LES it closes. If the LES is not closed immediately, it passes the stomach content back into the oesophagus. This causes symptoms such as burning chest pain known as Heart Burn. The symptoms, cause and treatments of such heartburn or called as the acid reflux disease are stated as under.
Acid Reflux Disease Symptoms
Some of the common symptoms that you might experience on the onset of acid reflux disease are:
- Heart Burn: a burning pain or sort of discomfort that may move from the stomach to your chest or abdomen, or might even cause a kind of acidity in your throat.
- Regurgitation: a bitter-tasting or sour acid feels like backing up your mouth or throat.
Other symptoms of the disease include:
- Hiccups that won’t let up
- Weight loss for no fair reason
- Bloody vomiting or black stools
- Wheezing, chronic sore throat, or a dry cough
- Dysphagia- narrowing of the oesophagus, which may create a sensation of food being trapped in the throat.
If these symptoms follow up two to three times frequently in a week or the medications aren’t bringing any lasting relief then you might need to see your doctor. Your doctor may order for some tests to check if you are really suffering from the acid reflux disease or not. These tests might include the barium swallow test, pH monitoring, endoscopy, or oesophageal manometry.
Acid Reflux Disease Causes
One of the main cause of the acid reflux disease is a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia is a severe stomach abnormality. It is caused when the upper part of the stomach and the LES move above the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscle that separates the stomach from the chest. Normally, the diaphragm is responsible for keeping acid in the stomach. But in case of a hiatal hernia, acid moves up into the oesophagus and causes symptoms of acid reflux disease.
Acid Reflux Disease Treatments
Treating with Lifestyle and Diet Changes
One of the best treatments to cure the acid reflux disease is to alter your diet and lifestyle. You may opt for eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. Moreover, if you are a smoker, please quit smoking. You need to raise your head at least 4 to 6 inches when you lay in your bed. and do not eat at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down. Try sleeping in a chair for a short time nap. Wearing tight bels can be injurious to health so you shall avoid that. If you are overweight, you shall try to lose weight in order to treat the acid reflux disease.
Treating With medicine
In many cases, the acid reflux disease can be cured with certain medications. Antacids can help you to treat the disease. If antacids don’t help your doctor might recommend some other medications, to neutralize the acidity of your stomach. These might include foaming agents, proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers or Prokinetics.
Treatment with Surgery
In severe cases, the acid reflux disease is treated with surgery or manometry. The most recently approved and adopted surgery technique is placing ring called ass LINUX around the outside of the lower end of the oesophagus. The ring consists of some magnetic titanium beads which are held together by titanium wires. The whole device helps to prevent stomach content (mainly acid) from backing up into the oesophagus.
